Ever wondered if we are one country or a country of countries? I keep wondering this at times when I put out facts about India’s linguistic angle.
India doesn’t have a national language. The thought
behind it, I think, is valid too: you can’t really have/enforce a national
language when a little more than half the population speaks it. If you look at
other countries of the world, the entire country speaks one language (the dialect
varies but they belong to the same language). In India, we have multiple
languages – 121 to be precise and these are just by grouping all dialects into
one main language – and each linguistic group feels dearly about their
language. It is fair enough considering that language binds us to our roots and
people.
Indian states were formed on the basis of
language to make it easier to govern people speaking the same language. The same language assures maximum similar culture and the administration becomes easier.
Of course, over the years people have migrated within the country and every
state is now an assemblage of people speaking various tongues.
I feel that our country and its people are
genuinely tolerant people. Think of it with the utmost care, it is difficult to
live with people who are different than us. The cross-cultural differences can
become explosive too yet, we have preserved the unity because we are tolerant humans.
The more I dig deeper into this, the more I realise that we are different from
each other to an extent that each state can be an independent country.
So, welcome to India: a country of countries
where cultures meet and live tolerantly with each other. I am mindful of the
other side of the coin regarding cross-cultural clashes and I think what I have
mentioned above explains the reasons for these differences.
Through today’s post, I don’t mean to preach
anything but just share an observation and hence, I will keep it short.
And hey you! Thanks for being here. Means a
lot. If you liked reading this, do share it with others, comment your thoughts
on it and help share the optimism.

True indeed....we have a mixture of culture and we as a country enjoy it! May it be languages, food, traditions India has incoperated so much in it. This blog literally made me remember a Civics lesson 'Unity in Diversity'😀
ReplyDeleteThis is so true. India is home to many cultures, languages, traditions and is a long standing witness to history. This Nation has contributed a lot to the world. The country has survived invasions and colonisation. We are tolerant beings just going about our ways while trying to make a little difference in the world.
