March 2020 had us marching in an unknown direction. Locked movements and heavenly freedom from studies for students. Dig deeper and you’ll realise that the virus revealed who really cares about knowledge and who doesn’t.
Lectures happened online and you know it, half
of the students were on YouTube on another tab “attending the lecture”. Education
was literally brought to your computers to avoid loss of knowledge.
This situation was a double-edged sword. If
there were students who went away from studies, there were many who embraced
the situation to do things which otherwise in a normal situation would be next
to impossible; most probably due to lack of time. Time saved, students took
full advantage of the situation.
As teachers, many of us got lucky during this
period. We ended up honing our skills and learning new stuff, reading new books, and got into various other activities. It provided us time to go beyond just
teaching. Classroom teaching was replaced by online teaching, whiteboard by
virtual whiteboard, and markers with styluses and graphic tablet pens.
Tests ended up being MCQ for the convenience of
checking; not to mention Google Sir who helped many to pass. Boards modified
their syllabus according to the situation. Yet, if you ask me, it was needless
to do so as students had a lot of time. By a rough calculation, every student
saved at least two hours extra every day thanks to no travelling to educational
institutions. Right from March 2020 to Dec 2020, it comes to almost a month
extra for studying. The medium was new and it took everyone time to get acclimatised
but it worked wonders for those who really made the best out of it.
Unfortunately, students lost the habit of
writing and the prescribed time for writing a paper made things tough for many.
To add to it, screen time made things worse for many. More than physical
exhaustion, it was all about mental exhaustion due to strain on the eyes.
All this said and done, this situation proved
who really cares and who doesn’t. The ones who dropped back indicated that they
had progressed just because there was a push given through educational
institutions. Even though this push was given online, it became a personal
responsibility. In any case, wasn’t self-development always a personal
responsibility irrespective of corona?

Everything has its own pros and cons. Not to spare the current Covid 19 pandemic, I've observed two sides of the same coin. The time saved (and thus utilized for otherwise neglected activities) by students (and everybody too) though could be seen as advantageous, yet how the studies of professional courses (viz. life sciences, technology etc.) could be all-embracing unless its students have practicals?

Sir, you expressed the situation correctly... I really think that the exams should neither be conducted online nor students should be promoted.. This will make students relaxed.. Your article reveals the advantages and disadvantages of COVID pandemic on education system... Worth sharing..
