The thrill is lost...

Just a few days back, SSC results were announced. Students have done well. The increase in the number of marks given to students is becoming tremendous. For example, a student gains more than 100% but just because 100% can’t be printed on the certificate and mark-sheet, it gets lowered down by 0.1% making it 99.99%.

Almost every student gains such kind of ‘so called’ amazing marks. ‘So called’ because 45 out of 60 students in a class getting more than 90% with ease. After a bit of survey, I found out that out of total 650 marks exam, 160 marks are internal i.e. given by the school. 160 marks make 24% and this number is too much for a failing student to pass.

Also, every school wants cent percent result and hence, it is seen that maximum marks are given to their students for making the result of the school better and better year by year.

In all this, the ones who really work hard the whole year face a huge loss even after securing good marks.

During my batch, in 2006-2007, we too had 650 marks examination with only 20 marks internal exam. Still, students used to get better marks. There was value for each percent. Even 70% and above was treated as really good marks. My senior batch had it a bit tougher, they had 750 marks examination.

All I am trying to say is there was more thrill on the day of the SSC results during our time. Every percent was treated with equal grace. Every student got what he/she truly deserved.

I remember that syllabus and paper pattern was immediately changed after 2006-2007. Suddenly, only 20 marks internal were made 160 marks, with an internal exam for every subject, including languages, science, math and social sciences. All of a sudden, there was a sudden and extreme boost in the marks students achieved. There was no limit. Even the student really not that deserving got better marks than the one who worked real hard. Also, another worst consequence was a student securing 85% is unhappy and unsatisfied with such nice marks.

Day by day, our whole education system seems to be degrading. Just because a 16 year old commits suicide because of fewer marks, 20 marks get converted into 160, so that no student should embrace death. This is not the solution. It the responsibility of the school, teachers and parents to take care of children, to handle them, to show them the proper road to success and not pressurize them. This boost in the marks has made admission of students difficult day by day. Hard working students who aim of getting the best institute for their further studies fail to reach their aim because of this unwanted increase in marks.

Marks should be scored, achieved by hard work and not distributed like sweets. This distribution is doing no good to the students, but it makes them overconfident, it does injustice to the hark working, the ones who are average or below average feel inferior.

It’s time we understand this and if not change this system then at least guide our children, brother, sister, friend in a proper way…
